How the USD to RMB Calculation Works

The maths is one multiplication. This tool reads the current USD/CNY mid-market rate and applies it to your amount:

RMB amount = USD amount × USD/CNY rate

Worked example: at a rate of 7.15, US$1,000 converts to 1,000 × 7.15 = ¥7,150. Reverse direction: divide — ¥7,150 ÷ 7.15 = US$1,000.

Terminology first, because it confuses everyone: renminbi (RMB, "the people's currency") is the currency itself; yuan is its unit — like "sterling" versus "pound". The ISO code is CNY. The rate here is mid-market; actual conversion channels price around it differently, as below.

Onshore CNY vs Offshore CNH: Two Prices for One Currency

Unlike any other major currency, the renminbi trades at two rates. CNY is the onshore rate, traded inside mainland China under capital controls: the People's Bank of China publishes a daily central-parity fix each trading morning, and onshore trading is confined to a band of ±2% around it. CNH is the offshore rate traded freely in Hong Kong, Singapore, and London, where it floats with supply and demand.

The two normally sit within a fraction of a percent of each other; when they diverge, the gap itself is a sentiment signal. Tools and banks quote one or the other — this page tracks the USD/CNY market rate used for the pair globally.

What US$100 (or US$10,000) Really Converts To — and Through What

ChannelTypical costWhat you get for US$10,000 at 7.15
Mid-market rate (this tool)No margin¥71,500
Card purchase in China1–3% FX fee≈ ¥69,400–¥70,800
Bank wire (subject to controls)Flat fee + margin + documentation≈ ¥70,000–¥70,800
Exchanging cash in ChinaQuotation spread + passport required≈ ¥70,000–¥71,000

China is the exception to "just wire it": cross-border RMB movements are governed by capital controls, so individuals face documentation requirements and, in mainland accounts, conversion quotas. Travellers exchanging cash need a passport; businesses need invoices matching the transfer purpose.

Why the Daily "Fix" Matters More Than Overnight News

In most free-floating currencies, news moves the rate instantly. Onshore CNY works differently: the PBoC sets the central parity each morning — a weighted reference against a basket of currencies and market levels — and onshore trading stays within ±2% of that fix for the day. A surprisingly strong or weak fix often signals policy intent more clearly than any statement, which is why China watchers read the daily fix the way bond markets read central-bank minutes. For your conversion, the practical effect is that onshore rates move in a narrower daily corridor than you might expect from headline news.

The yuan is managed within a daily fixing band by the PBOC:

PeriodAvg RateRangeKey Driver

Q2 20257.227.16-7.28US tariff escalation; CNY weakened
Q3 20257.157.10-7.20PBOC stimulus package boosted sentiment
Q4 20257.127.08-7.18Export competitiveness priority
Q1 20267.187.12-7.24Trade tensions renewed; capital outflow
Q2 20267.207.14-7.26PBOC balanced stability vs export support

Practical takeaway: Onshore CNY and offshore CNH can diverge 200-500 pips during stress. Confirm whether your provider uses onshore or offshore rates.

FAQ

They describe the same money at different layers. Renminbi (RMB, "the people's currency") is the currency's name; the yuan is its base unit; CNY is the ISO 4217 code for the onshore currency. CNH is the informally designated code for offshore-traded renminbi.
