How Any Cross Rate Is Calculated
Every pair on this site derives from dollar-quoted markets, because the USD is the vehicle currency of foreign exchange — it sits on one side of roughly 88% of all trades (BIS 2022 Triennial Survey). A cross rate multiplies through it:
EUR → JPY = EUR amount × EUR/USD rate × USD/JPY rate
Worked example: converting €1,000 to yen with EUR/USD at 1.0865 and USD/JPY at 149.50: 1,000 × 1.0865 × 149.50 = ¥162,431.75. The calculator here performs exactly this chain for any pair it does not quote directly — which is why the mid-market result is identical no matter which direction you convert.
Base and Quote: Reading Any Currency Pair
Pairs are written BASE/QUOTE, and the rate answers one question: how much quote currency does one unit of base buy? EUR/USD 1.0865 means €1 buys $1.0865. Flip the direction and you divide: 1 ÷ 1.0865 = 0.9204, so $1 buys €0.9204. This single rule explains every conversion this tool performs — there is no hidden "direction penalty" in the market itself; you always sit on the mid-market rate until a provider adds margin.
Conventions survive history: GBP, EUR, AUD, and NZD are always quoted against the dollar (a relic of sterling-era finance), while USD fronts the yen, won, and most emerging-market pairs.
Why Every Provider Gives You a Different Number
| Layer | Who sets it | Typical spread to mid-market |
|---|---|---|
| Interbank mid-market | The global FX market | — (the reference) |
| Card networks | Visa/Mastercard wholesale rate | ≈ 0–1% |
| Specialist transfer services | Provider pricing | ≈ 0.5–2% |
| Retail banks | Bank FX desk | ≈ 1–3% |
| Airport/tourist kiosks | Counter pricing | ≈ 5–8% |
The market rate is the same everywhere at the same instant; what differs is each provider's margin. Any "zero commission" offer lives or dies on this table — always compare the final received amount for the same amount and timestamp.
ISO 4217: The Code System Behind the Dropdowns
Every currency here carries a three-letter ISO 4217 code whose first two letters usually name the country and the third names the money: USD, JPY, KRW, MXN, BRL. Some codes encode history instead — CHF for Switzerland's Confoederatio Helvetica, INR for the Indian rupee's colonial-era "R". Rare duplicates exist too: USD, CAD, AUD, MXN and others all use "$" as a symbol, which is exactly why codes — not symbols — are the unambiguous language of conversion. When a form asks for a currency, the code is what it means.
Understanding Rate Volatility Across Currency Pairs
Different pairs exhibit different volatility profiles:
| Pair Type | Daily Volatility | Monthly Range | Example Pairs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Major pairs | 0.3-0.7% | 2-5% | EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY |
| Commodity currencies | 0.5-1.0% | 3-7% | AUD/USD, USD/CAD, NZD/USD |
| EM Asian | 0.3-0.8% | 2-5% | USD/INR, USD/KRW, USD/SGD |
| EM Latin America | 0.5-1.5% | 3-8% | USD/MXN, USD/BRL, USD/COP |
| Managed/fixed | 0.1-0.3% | 0.5-2% | USD/CNY, USD/SAR, USD/AED |
Timing guidance: Major pairs most liquid during London-NY overlap (8AM-12PM ET). Avoid converting Friday afternoons or before central bank announcements when spreads widen.
