How the USD to CAD Calculation Works

A single multiplication does it. This tool reads the current USD/CAD mid-market rate and applies it to your amount:

CAD amount = USD amount × USD/CAD rate

Worked example: at a rate of 1.3650, US$1,000 converts to 1,000 × 1.3650 = C$1,365.00. Reverse direction: divide — C$1,365.00 ÷ 1.3650 = US$1,000.

A rate above 1.00 means one US dollar buys more than one Canadian dollar — the normal state since the loonie's brief stint above parity in 2011. The rate shown is mid-market; whatever you actually pay through a bank or card will include a margin on top of it.

The Loonie Moves With Oil — Here's Why It Matters to You

Canada's dollar is the classic petrocurrency: crude oil is the country's largest single export, so sustained WTI price moves tend to pull USD/CAD in the opposite direction — higher oil, stronger CAD. The BIS 2022 Triennial Survey puts USD/CAD at roughly 5.5% of global FX turnover, making it one of the ten most-traded pairs despite Canada's economic size.

For cross-border planning, note that the Bank of Canada announces its rate decisions on eight fixed dates a year, and US–Canada economic data lands on the same calendar — the pair is quietest in a calm news week and jumpy around energy shocks.

Cross-Border Reality: What Converting US$1,000 Actually Yields

MethodTypical costWhat you get for US$1,000 at 1.3650
Mid-market rate (this tool)No marginC$1,365.00
Canadian card purchase2–2.5% FX fee≈ C$1,330–C$1,338
US bank wire to CanadaFlat fee + 1–2% margin≈ C$1,325–C$1,350
Cross-border ATMNetwork rate + surcharges≈ C$1,320–C$1,350

Figures are illustrative. One cross-border specific: many Canadian merchants near the border quote prices in both currencies, and "pay in USD" at a Canadian terminal is dynamic currency conversion — decline it and let your issuer convert at the network rate.

Moving Larger Amounts Between the US and Canada

The US–Canada corridor is unusual: it is high-volume (the largest bilateral goods trade relationship on earth) but retail FX pricing is stickier than the corridor's liquidity implies. For property purchases, tuition, or business invoices above roughly C$10,000, quote at least one specialist FX provider against your bank — the spread difference between 1% and 2.5% on that size is the difference between about C$136 and C$341 lost per C$13,650. For recurring transfers, some providers let you fix a rate forward for up to a year, which converts currency timing from a gamble into a budget line.

The Canadian dollar tracks oil prices closely:

PeriodAvg RateRangeKey Driver
Q1 20251.36501.3520-1.3780WTI below $70; CAD weakened
Q2 20251.35801.3450-1.3720Oil recovered; BoC cut 25bp
Q3 20251.34801.3350-1.3620Summer driving season boosted oil
Q4 20251.35501.3420-1.3700OPEC+ production increase fears

Q2 20261.35801.3450-1.3720BoC paused; oil stabilized near $75

Practical takeaway: A $5/barrel oil move typically shifts USD/CAD by 1-2 cents. Cross-border shoppers should check provincial duty-free thresholds ($200 CAD for 48+ hour trips).

FAQ

Convenience pricing. Border and tourist merchants accept USD as a service but apply their own margin (often 3–10% worse than mid-market) plus change given in CAD at their rate. Paying by card at the network rate is almost always cheaper than handing over USD notes.
